Rise of a knight [Connal] « Thread Started on Nov 1, 2009, 7:22pm »
Approaching the island Florence couldn't help but feel dread at what Connal may have to face alone. It killed her to think that she had to stay behind. She knew that Connal was able to complete whatever tasks were required of him--yet that didn't stop her from worrying. This had to be done, he had to become a dragon rider. Alcanous needed a knight, it needed a hero. Connal was destined for this purpose. When the group reached the island and disembarked from the boat Florence tried to keep her thoughts to a minimum. She couldn't dwell on this, Connal would be fine.
Looking around the island she let out a small sigh. Turning her gaze toward Connal she didn't quite know what to say. What could she say? She couldn't help him, her only task was to wait. Ever since Florence came to Alcanous she always acted. She promised that she would help anyone who needed her. Now, all she could do was be left behind. Looking down for a moment she took in a few deep breaths. Keeping her eyes on her feet she spoke up, "Are you ready Connal?" Slowly she lifted her head until he came into view. She masked her emotions an acted normally, the last thing she wanted was Connal to worry about her instead of his tasks.

Connal hadn't slept well, much to his father and Florence's dismay. He had been worried about what he'd go through all night. What would happen once he arrived? He needed to complete it on his own. Something he was certainly used to. So that wasn't what bothered him. What did? Connal couldn't quite put his mind on it but it was there. They took a boat out on the water, taking shortcuts only his father knew to reach the island. It was a long while to get there and most of it was spent in silence.
Once they arrived, he could see that it was quite large and untamed. To tell its exact size was rather impossible at the moment. He stared at it, taking it in, trying not to feel overwhelmed. No pressure at all.... glancing at Florence he gave a mute nod. Forcing his nerves away to not worry anyone (though he knew it was pointless), he stood up as the boat came to a stop on the shore. Getting up, he threw his heavy cloak on as the temperature drastically changed from warm to freezing.
The sky was darkening which meant it was going to rain as well. He was given no provisions or horse and only carried his weapons with him. Sighing some, he looked about them and then curiously saw white flakes beginning to drift down. This isle was very strange, the atmosphere was different somehow. Though Connal didn't really want to ponder about what was magical or not, he wanted to get this done with. However long it took.
"Rain and snow at once. A bad omen," he muttered to himself. Connal knew Florence would be all right staying with his father yet he also was aware that she would worry regardless. Something he couldn't help himself. He could only pray he got through this alive.

Crossing her arms Florence still scanned the island, searching for something. She dared not look toward Connal now. There was that horrid thought in the back of her mind, what if Connal never came back? What would she do? Florence tried to push the thought away but it wouldn't leave. Hearing Connal's words she immediately shot a look at him. Oh, she was going to be quite sick soon. Staying calm she shook her head slowly, "Hopefully it's just some odd weather," Florence whispered.
Florence felt like she should shrink away. It was her only defense, she just wished she could do something! Keeping her physicality strongly closed off she became stiff. If she moved she may faint. "Your going to succeed," Florence said to Connal barley keeping him in her sight. He had to, he would. This time had to come. After today, everything would be different. When Connal became a dragon rider who knew what would happen.
Accepting his destiny Florence would offer support, one of the only things she could do. He was her life and nothing would change that. Florence wanted to say more but found herself unable to speak. Looking toward the sky she simply let the snow and rain fall on her face. Returning her gaze toward Connal all she could do was stare. He changed her life and she loved him more than anything else. He would come back.

Connal found himself really growing quiet while his father explained that the trials varied for each individuial. So knowing anything at all beforehand as he hoped, wasn't going to happen. He gave a nod just catching Florence's words. He knew he'd make it. Connal just wished his heart wasn't going so fast. Finding nothing to do or say, all he could do was brace himself and prepare to step off into the wilderness before them.

As Brennus explained about the trails she grew even more worried. Great, just great! So he was about to go out into the unknown, how was he even supposed to find out about these trails? This dragon rider situation was far more complicated than she could've thought. Although Florence was on the verge of a panic attack on the inside her exterior remained calm. In her time at the facility she had a talent for not showing any emotion, luckily that came into use here. Turning her gaze back to Connal she noticed him staring off into the woods. Any moment now he would disappear and who knows how long it would take him to complete these trials.
Making her way toward him she kept her eyes glued to the woods. "Are you going to go or am I going to have to make you?" Florence tried to sound light hearted but it wasn't quite working. Turning to face Connal she sighed, it was hard to find words. Taking a step closer she kissed him, "I'll be waiting for when you return." Barley smiling she forced herself to walk away, if she didn't she may end up following him.

With barely either of them smiling, he was still glad Florence was here at all. He didn't know what he would do without her. Connal didn't want to linger or he'd never get moving and it'd only worry them more. Taking a deep breath, he went off alone not knowing what he'd find. He also chose not to look back, it would only serve to make it harder were he to see their faces.
It felt like he had stepped into another realm. Everything was silent. The shoreline had disappeared behind him. The wet mixture of rain and snow still fell and clung to his hair and clothing making it cold on his skin. Drawing his sword, he kept on the single widened path before him. Connal wouldn't know what would come out at him or how long this would take. He just knew he had to pass. Each step forward was like a heavy weight piling on, trying to drag him down. The path wasn't clear, laden with snow as his shoes trod into them, leaving behind footprints.
How much time passed one wouldn't be able to say. So far nothing jumped out at him. The only sound was his breathing and his feet crunching in the rising snow.

Florence didn't turn to see Connal leave, there was no way she could handle that. Taking her bag out she went under a tree for cover sitting down she took out some extra clothing and a cloak to keep warm. Then her eyes eventually looked in the direction where Connal was heading. If only she could--sleep or anything to pass the time until he was back. Looking up into the sky she groaned, "Why does the weather here have to be so--indecisive!?" Although Florence knew Brennus was still near she was more talking to herself.
Florence mused over hitting her head on a tree to be rendered unconscious--that would pass the time. What was she thinking? Oh, she was loosing it. She had never been more scared, how was she to know that Connal would be all right?

"I can't wait to leave this island. If it's not raining, it's snowing, and if it's not snowing, it's foggy. ... And that's summer. Only we seem to get both of it right now," a voice spoke up. A dark cloaked hooded man came into view walking down the cold shore towards the pair's resting place. His keen eyes immediately looked to Brennus and smiled.
He was dressed in black from head to toe save for the intricate silver weavings upon his shoulders and chest which formed the symbol of the Dragonmaster.
"It's been some time Brennus. I was wondering when you would show." Cian said to his old friend. He soon looked to Florence. "Ah, where are my manners? I'm Cian, a Dragon Rider."

As Florence caught sight of a man approaching she cocked an eyebrow. Reading him quickly she knew he wasn't going to be any trouble. As he talked about the weather she sighed, now she really wanted to get off of this island. When he introduced herself she smiled some, "Nice to meet you. I'm Florence, a currently nerve wracked --" Looking over at Brennus she spoke quietly, "What did you call me a few weeks ago?" Remembering she looked back to Cian, "Oh, Yes--Seer." Florence's current state was nearly comic, it was to hide how horrified she was.
At times Florence became overly sarcastic to hide her emotions, either that or she would go numb. This island was mad! If Connal was to be a dragon rider why did he have to prove himself? The dragons should--come to him. Florence let out a sigh, there was nothing she could do about it. It wasn't long until Florence began to watch the spot where Connal last was seen. She wondered how long it would be.

Agrona caught wind of new comers on the island. Well, was there a new dragon rider in the making. Slowly, he made his way to the shore. Setting his eyes upon his two old friends and a new young women he sighed. So the new dragon rider was already facing his trials? Making his way over to the group he sad on a nearby piece of drift wood. "Ah, Brennus! You've decided to remain young I see. Am I the only one who thought the natural aging process was the correct way to go?" Smiling he gave a friendly nod to Cian.
"Is the dragon rider to be already out facing his fears? Too bad, I rather hoped I could have meet him before."

Masking his worry with great skill, he smiled when his friend Cian showed up and began speaking to Florence. Dragon Riders, those who were left of the old order, usually arrived to the island when a new Rider was taking the trials. It was something they all 'knew'. They shared a lifeforce connection between each other and would know if one had fallen, Awakened, or some other unexplainable event. Which was why they had all gathered now.
Looking out, he noticed, or rather heard Agrona arrive. Brennus laughed at his question. "Well Cian isn't too far behind. ... We just happen to age slower than you! Or perhaps I just enjoy my looks too much to think of growing a beard!"

"Really? I always thought you were the unfortunate looking one." Agrona said with a matter-of-fact tone. Chuckling her looked toward the woman. Her eyes were still glued to one spot in the forest, no doubt she was looking for the new rider. Agrona introduced himself to her but said no more. He could tell she was too worried at the moment to converse. She reminded Agrona of his lost loved one. Hopefully Florence would be strong enough to stay with the new rider. The life of a dragon rider wasn't the easiest, for the rider and their loved ones.

How long has it been? Only about a half and hour it would seem maybe less. Why couldn't she have the ability to speed up time? The one thing she wanted more than anything was to see Connal walk back to her from where he disappeared. Him being off like this made her wonder what she would do if he never did come back, if perhaps he was defeated. What would she do? Florence knew that she would have to force herself to go on, to keep on fighting. Yet she knew that without Connal she couldn't live happily. He was her only reason to be here, she believed he was why she was here.
Florence must have been tuning out the others because she didn't hear any of their conversation. All she could do was stare at the spot where she last saw Connal. As Agrona introduced himself she looked toward him, giving a nod she softly smiled. However she soon returned to her former dread. When Agrona asked who the rider was Florence responded but kept her eyes on the same spot, "His name is Connal, Brennus' son."

A smile appeared on Agrona's face. "Brennus' son? Ah! That is splendid news, its good to know one of us had a son. I would have had many sons but--" Agrona cleared his throat. "How long ago did he begin his trial? Surly not too long ago, hopefully he doesn't have to face a long wait to become a rider. Our world's need for him is growing stronger." The young women remained ever quite and kept her eyes to the trees, he wondered what she could possibly be thinking.
Being a dragon rider was a responsibility. Agrona only hoped that this Connal was up for the task.

Cian had kept quiet and listened to the others speaking, observing Florence for a time as well. It was quite obvious she had feelings for Connal. After a moment of silence, with his eyes still fixed on her he spoke reassuringly and with a hint of confidence, "He'll pass and make it through. We'll know it when hear a dragon." Tilting his head some with a smile he added, "Come and talk with us Florence, we are most curious about you." He glanced over at Agrona who was in his usual mode of talking a little too much, though, he wouldn't be who he was were he to do so less.
He could see Brennus was keeping quiet, no doubt for the same reason Florence had. However Brennus would come around soon, they needed a slight change of atmosphere. The pressure, worry, tension and general nervousness wasn't going to do anything.
