Who, When, and Where of People and Events. Thousands of years ago, the Blue Star was infected with evil by a god named Zophar; a goddess named Althena was only able to stop him by destroying nearly all life on the planet. Unable to restore the planet until several millennia had passed, Althena created four intelligent Dragons -a White one, a Red one, a Blue one and a Black one- that each shared a part of her divine power. The Dragons spend most of their time sleeping underground until they are needed.
Althena also decreed that there would be a champion called The Dragonmaster to lead Alcanous's heroes; this person would be anyone who managed to find all the Dragons and pass their tests. There have been many Dragonmasters across the centuries.
The people of Alcanous became very devoted to Althena, though many remember Alcanous's origins as only an old legend.
Notable Dragonmasters
Dragonmaster Bowen: A knight who followed the Old Code. He taught Prince Einon, and when his pupil turned to evil after being saved by a dragon, he thought it to be the dragon's doing, and vowed to hunt down every dragon until he found him. Twelve years later, Bowen is still doing so, until he encounters Draco, who informs him that he is the last of his kind, and the two make a deal to continue faking Draco's death. Through Draco, Bowen comes to know Kara, a rebel, and befriends Draco. Though reluctant at first, disillusioned into believing the Old Code no longer matters, Draco reminds him of his oath when they come to the isle of Tirnanogue. He eventually agrees to help Kara in her fight against Einon. At the climax of the battle, Bowen is forced to an ultimatum: to let his friend live and so also Einon, or to kill Draco and so end Einon's evil.
Draco's sacrifice ushers in a new beginning for Alcanous. Bowen becomes the first Dragonmaster and rules the land peacefully with Kara by his side. He then has two sons, Nicholas and Lantis.
Dragonmaster Nicholas: Son of Dragonmaster Bowen and Head priest to Princess Aislin. Nicholas fell deeply in love with the beautiful and kind princess. Despite her best efforts to put Alcanous first and foremost, Princess Aislin fell in love with Nicholas as well. When Aislin goes missing, Nicholas comes forth as having had kidnapped Princess Aislin. In reality, Aislin was so terribly upset by her lack of will she imprisoned herself in the dungeons to avoid seeing Nicholas.
Nicholas had a deep hatred for Alcanous' pillar system. (A system he long pleaded with his father to remove, much to Nicholas' despair and Bowen's heavy heart.) The pillar must devote every moment of their existence praying for the land and people of Alcanous and never seek happiness from any place but seeing Alcanous prosper. Nicholas was tortured seeing Aislin chained down like this, and even more when she had to resist the love between them that had grown. He decided that rather Aislin return as the pillar and continue to be a slave to Alcanous, he would rather have Alcanous cease to exist. However he never acts on this.
Lord Gavin, the future Magic Emperor and already Nicholas' rival in power has plans of his own. He is the Lord of the country of Farrowholme and a former pupil of Aldric. He used to belong in the royal court of Alcanous, serving as Master Mage to Bowen. During his time in Alcanous he met Nicholas. However over time he developed a dislike for the Head Priest. His thoughts that perhaps the other man held more power than he, and was far more influential in most matters causing him to become jealous and begin a bitter rivalry that soon became a centuries long battle.
When he had left Alcanous after a time he sought to overthrow Nicholas at his coronation, and stormed into the castle with his men on that night. The battle was long and it seemed like Nicholas was gaining the upperhand. That was until the princess was eventually targeted and killed by Gavin.
He flees with Kreios and bides his time for three hundred years to make his move.
Dragon Riders were first created by Bowen as his highest ranking and most loyal knights to keep the peace and order among all the races and governments throughout Alcanous. As time went on, the Dragon Riders' deeds became well-known, and the Dragon Rider's Council came to control the land. While the Dragon Riders held sway, the land prospered and great cities were built. The Dragon Riders helped establish peace treaties between nations and even quell small skirmishes and conflicts.
All Riders are able to use magic with ability outstripping that of any other magician, though the uses of magic practiced by Riders are not significantly different (except in extent of its influence) from those practiced by others. Wild dragons are said to be fiercer and less articulate of thought than Riders' dragons, though they are genetically identical and have been known to interbreed.
Using an unknown female, a false Althena conveys Zophar's wishes to the people of Alcanous in the guise of Althena's message.
Once the Goddess Althena gave up her immortality over 1000 years ago, Zophar was able to slowly recover by using the humans on Alcanous to gather power. He turned Althena's religion into a fanatical cult known as Althena's Chosen who oppressed the humans of Alcanous, creating strife and evil. His power increased to the point where he could resurrect others and used Kreios, the former Magic Emperor's right hand, to aid in his plans for conquest. Through Kreios, Zophar was able to seal away the powers of the Four Dragons into objects called Auras. He entrusted the Auras to the Four Heroes, four of his most powerful followers. The Four Dragons were among the few beings who could seriously challenge Zophar's power, so without them, his return is virtually unopposed.
