  • Name: Mark Harlean
  • Age: 34
  • Personality: Soft spoken, well educated Mark can easily make friends. Even though he is kind and longs to do good his personality allows for others to walk all over him. His downfall is loosing hope. When things get hard he struggles even more so than others. His upbringing had not prepared him for the trails that come with life.

  • History:
Mark grew up peacefully, he had a loving family and supportive friends. His life was ordinary. Like any good child Mark did good in school and progressed in every way possible. When the time came to choose a career it was only natural that he choose the field of medicine. Half way through medical school he soon discovered the field of mental illness. Eventually he became quite fascinated with all the case studies.

Getting through school took him longer than he expected. Luckily the troubles of school didn't keep him alone. He met a young woman by the name of Audrey. It wasn't exactly love at first sight. Audrey, being an 'artist' didn't have much respect for the logical world of science. The two bickered endlessly. It took months for them to even be able to sit in a room peaceably together. The two didn't spend much time together, they would see one another here and there but eventually they didn't see each other at all.

One day Mark was coming home late from a lab when he saw someone walking on the side of the road. Finding the person familiar he slowed beside the stranger. Noticing it was Audrey he was at first surprised but eventually convinced her to let him give her a ride home. The two caught up with each other and amazingly found the other more agreeable. Nearly a year later the two were married.

Over that time Mark found work in the Facility. A secret place for 'the mentally challenged'. Mark was one of the first younger graduates there. Yet no matter how he tried to move up they used his age against him. They would say he wasn't qualified enough. He stayed in the facility yet was kept on the sidelines. His patience payed off when he was assigned to the odd case of Florence Desmond. Florence had been at the facility for about four years when he got on the case.

Mark genuinely wanted to help Florence but, like the others, he made little progress. Putting aside a direct doctoral approach he started to talk with Florence. He began to pity the girl, she couldn't control her 'ability'. Although being locked up here had caused her to be emotionless. Slowly, he began to believe that Florence wasn't mad at all. Soon after he started to campaign for Florence to be let go. His cause was almost successful, if it wasn't for Wesley Clark. His arrival caused Mark to be taken off of Florence's case.

The two grew to despise each other. Mark, wanted to help Florence. Wesley wanted to abuse her power. The fighting continued one battle to let her go the other to keep her locked up. Yet Harlean's beliefs were soon to be tested. Florence foresaw the death of his wife. Mark was left alone, he was unable to grasp the fact of his wife's death. The love of his life was gone and it could have been prevented, if Florence only told someone.

Mark grew angry and put the blame on Florence. Unable to shoulder the grief he soon lost some of his composure. He eventually was able to visit with Florence. The young girl showed wisdom beyond her years and explained that there was nothing that could have been done. That meeting gave Mark the courage to continue to push for Florence's release and go on with life. Succeeding in his cause Florence was released.

Wesley continued to obsess over Florence. He would send men out to find out where she was and what she was doing. Yet slowly Wesley took over the facility. Unable to stop the take-over Mark decided to stay in the facility. He would help the patients he could.

"Let me talk with the girl!" Harlean had been trying to convince Dr. Clark to let her talk with Florence for over an hour. It was obvious that Clark was growing tired of all the chatter.

"Dr. Harlean, I'm very sorry for your wife's departure but what good will talking with patient 43779 do? She's gone Mark. Talking more of her death, especially with someone as unstable as Miss. Desmond, will not do you any good. The girl doesn't speak with anyone--anymore." Wesley's voice was blank, it held no emotion. It was almost as if he was mocking Mark.

"You and I both know that she's not mad. She can see the deaths of others and you can stop this sick charade. Stop making her believe that she is mentally ill." Mark felt conflicted about Florence but he still held onto the fact that she was being wronged. He had to still fight for his patient.

At his words Clark laughed, "Oh my poor Doctor. The likes of her are meant to be kept caged. If not she would surly go insane."

"Your sick. Let me talk with her or I will pull to take her case from you." Clark looked a bit surprised by his words, "You would hate that wouldn't you? Your precious patient to be taken from you, your life's work in the hands of another" Mark knew he hit the right point.

Dr. Clark rolled his eyes and spoke quickly, "Well your persistence has paid off. She's in the white room. I doubt you'll get anything out of her. ...But I wish you luck."

Mark immediately set off to the white room. He could hear down the hall the sound of a piano. The music was floating from the white room. This was a regular occurrence, Florence would pass the time by playing the piano. It's the only 'normal' activity she was allowed to participate in. The tune was haunting, like every song she played. Upon entering the white room the music immediately stopped. Florence remained seated staring at the keys, her breathing was broken and her posture was frail.

"You've come--to ask about what I saw?" Florence's speech became more robotic over time. Dr. Clark's influence was obvious to see. Yet Mark couldn't pity her, not now.

"Yes." Mark took a seat at the table. Usually during examination Florence would have sat across but she still remained at the piano. Her eyes still gazing at the keys. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you tell anyone, she could have been saved."

Florence stuttered at first, unable to get words out. Finally she calmed and was able to talk coherently. "There was nothing that could have been done. I--I"

"You what? If you just told me she would still be alive! How hard is that task?" Mark yelled, he was tired of keeping his emotions in check. Florence shrunk away from him.

"It was a mistake on my part. I s-should have done something. ...I was frightened. Your wife died because of the foolishness of another--I grieve for you. I know your anguish--" Florence broke off unable to speak any longer. Her hands began to shake, it seemed for a moment as if she would weep.

"You know nothing of what I'm going through." Mark stated darkly.

At his words Florence's eyes met his, it was almost as if she could see right through him. Her green eyes were the only color on her face, she looked weak and sickly pale. Yet the emotion in her eyes was clear, she was feeling something. "I don't just see, I feel. I have felt the emotions of many whom have lost a loved one. W-why do you think it's so hard for me to even express my own emotions. I don't know what ones are my own--" Her voice broke as she shook a little more.

For a moment Mark forgot of his own pain. This girl was suffering. As a doctor he felt the need to help her but he was no longer on her case. She should be improving but instead she was getting worse. "What has Dr. Clark been doing to you Florence?" Mark whispered.

Florence reverted her gaze back to the piano keys. She ran her fingers across them slowly. "He--wishes to know my power. I--I can't remember much anymore. He's been giving me, treatments. My memories--are scattered. There was a day when I couldn't remember my name." Her manner of speech was unsettling. As if she was straining her mind to find something. Clark was experimenting on her.

Some tears finally escaped from Florence. That was the first time he'd seen her cry, she never cried. "...I know of your thoughts of giving up. I am very sorry Dr. Harlean but you have to go on. Your wife would have not wanted you to give up. Please live for your wife."

Something about Florence touched him. She knew more about life than anyone, yet she wasn't allowed to have her own. Her words gave him hope. "...Why did it have to be her? She wasn't supposed to leave."

"No, she wasn't. I know she never wanted to leave you, her life was happy because of you. Please, don't do as I've seen others do. Honor her memory, live." Florence forced herself to become composed, she turned as blank as she was before.

"I will try." With that Mark slowly stood. Looking at Florence he gave a small nod and left the room. He could feel Florence still watching him as he left. Her words would haunt him for years to come. It seems the doctor has now become the patient.
